During winter 2015/16 I will deliver inhouse courses about development with JavaScript and AngularJS to teams at Puzzle ITC, mtrail GmbH, Mobiliar, Postfinance and SBB.

I will also deliver public courses for DigiComp and TechTalk:

At DigiComp my next course “Frontend-Entwicklung mit AngularJS” is scheduled for December 17th & 18th 2015 in Bern.
There are already enough registrations so that the course is guaranteed to take place, but there is still room for more participants …

I am delivering a three day course “Front-End Development with JavaScript, AngularJS and Visual Studio 2015” for TechTalk.
The course will take place:
- November 16th - 18th 2015 in Vienna
- January 25th - 27th 2016 in Zürich
… there are still places left.

Next Speaking Engagements

I will hold my workshop “JavaScript for real Developers: A survival Bootcamp” on September 1st at the “ch/open Workshoptage“.
I have been holding workshops at the “ch/open Workshoptage” for the last 9 years, and I think it is one of the best tech event in Switzerland.
It’s the third time I hold the “JavaScript for real Developers” workshop at the “ch/open Workshoptage” (but I have held the same content at many in-house trainings). The last two years the workshop was always fully booked in a short period of time.

Update July 31: The workshop is almost full, a re-run is scheduled.

I am proud that I was invited for the fifth time to speak at the annual SBB Developer Day on September 9th. I will give an introduction to TypeScript.

On August 3rd I will hold my course “Einführung in die Frontend-Entwicklung mit JavaScript und AngularJS” at DigiComp for the first time. The course is not yet fully booked, there is still time to register …

The curious Life of JavaScript: The slides from my talk at SI-SE 2015

I had great fun presenting "The curious Life of JavaScript" at SI-SE 2015.
I went trough the demos and code examples very quickly, rather as a teaser to show how modern JavaScript development might look.

Upcoming Speaking Engagements

On May 8 the 20th SI-SE Fachtagung will take place in Rapperswil. The title of the Conference is “Next Generation Web & Mobile UIs”.

I will give a talk titled “JavaScript - Past, Present, Future”.

On June 30 I will hold a hands-on workshop “JavaScript for Real Developers” at the Java User Group in Zurich.

As every year the conference was a great event with many great sessions and interesting discussions during the breaks.

This Friday the annual Choose Forum will take place in Bern.

The Choose Forum is a small and lesser known conference that features highly interesting speakers each year.

I am very honored that I was invited to speak at the Forum this year along with Michael Feathers, Erik Doernenburg and Adam Tornhill.

My talk is titled “There is something about JavaScript”: 

This is the tale of an enterprise developer taking the adventurous journey into the realm of JavaScript. We will learn about all the dangerous pitfalls that lured on the way, but also about all the amazing encounters and beautiful discoveries that were waiting in on our protagonist.

I am looking forward to the event on Friday.

ch/open Workshop Days: Great Program as Always!

The program of this year's ch/open Workshop Days has been published.

As every year, it is a great program with many interesting sessions. This year even with 5 parallel tracks. It’s going to be a hard for me to decide which sessions to attend...

On Wednesday I will hold my “JavaScript Survival-Bootcamp”. The session was a big success last year (fully booked twice), and I intend to repeat that.

Unfortunately Marc will not be able to hold the workshop with me this year.

AngularJS: Illustrating Model-View-Whatever

There are already many attempts at explaining and illustrating the concepts for structuring an Application in Angular.

Actually Angular was declared a MVW (Model-View-Whatever) Framework to avoid further philosophical discussions.

I am teaching JavaScript, are you interested?

Last month I was teaching my workshop “Professional JavaScript for Java Developers” at Puzzle ITC and at Glue Software Engineering AG in Bern and both workshops were received very well.

At the same time I am currently teaching a block of 8 days at the University of Applied Science in Bern in the new CAS “Multiplatform Development with HTML5” about the topics JavaScript, JavaScript Frameworks and HTML5.

JavaScript has a lot of momentum right now. Especially corporate environments are currently embracing JavaScript (together with HTML5) as a serious option for developing and delivering enterprise applications.

Traditionally professional development teams in corporate environments were not exposed to JavaScript, even when they were creating web applications. Therefore in many teams there is a reluctance to accept JavaScript as a viable platform.

My workshop shows the current state of the JavaScript ecosystem (Frameworks, Libraries, Tools) and touches all the aspects of professional development in the JavaScript ecosystem. The workshop is especially addressing traditional OO programmers with an enterprise background. Attendees learn how to realise the concepts and best practices they know and love from their traditional platforms (Java, .NET …) on the JavaScript platform. This ranges from constructs for encapsulation and modularisation over debugging and unit testing to build automation and dependency management. 

The main modules of the workshop are the following:

• Introduction to JavaScript and the JavaScript Ecosystem
• JavaScript: The Language
• Introduction to jQuery
• The JavaScript Development Toolchain
• Client-Side MVC with AngularJS
• Communication with the Backend

The workshop consists of many demos and hands-on exercises. The minimal duration is one full day. For a deeper dive into certain modules the workshop can be extended to two or three days.

/ch/open Workshop Tage: JavaScript Bootcamp for Java Developers

Last week Marc and I held a workshop at the /ch/open Workshoptage:

JavaScript for Real Developers: A Survival-Bootcamp

 

The goal of the full-day workshop was to give typical Java enterprise developers an overview over the current landscape and ecosystem of JavaScript development. Typical undifferentiated prejudices that exist towards JavaScript should be refuted (or confirmed with facts).

The topic we focused on were:

• JavaScript as a language (concepts, patterns, parallels to other OO languages …)
• jQuery as a de-facto standard library for client-side JavaScript development
• The JavaScript toolchain (setting up a professional development and build toolchain)
• Integration of a JavaScript project into a Java project (using Maven and/or Node.js)
• Modern Web Architectures (JavaScript for the frontend, Java for the backend)
• Client Side MVC

I had the idea for this workshop some time ago, when I was working in several enterprise web projects, and I realised that JavaScript is getting more and more important for any kind of (web) projects, but typical enterprise developers (like me) try to avoid the topic at any price. Usually all abstractions (like JSF or GWT) break at some point and JavaScript leaks through. But then it is mostly too late to start dealing with JavaScript professionally, because the project has already progressed into a phase where it's not possible to lay the necessary groundwork for serious JavaScript development. 

The workshop seemed to hit a nerve in the current Java enterprise community: It was fully booked within a few days after the program for the workshop days was published (because there are hands-on exercises in the workshop, we limited the maximal number of attendees to 20).

Thanks to the organisers of the workshop days, we could schedule the workshop a second time at the same workshop days. Also this second workshop was booked out within several days.

I enjoyed the two days of teaching very much and working with Marc was great fun. From both workshops we also got quite good feedback (the official feedback is published here), so we guess that it was also a good experience for the attendees.

I hope there will be the possibility to repeat the workshops in the future. We are open for any suggestions...

/ch/open Workshop-Days 2012

Simon and I are holding a workshop about object relational mapping with JPA2 next Thursday at the /ch/open Workshop-Days 2012.

This year is the first time since we are doing this course that the workshop is not fully booked… probably JPA is getting an uninteresting legacy technology?

So if you don't know what to do next Thursday, you can still get a seat in our workshop … however if I am honest I would suggest to have a look at the parallel course "Java EE testing revised with Arquillian" … it looks very promising. I would definitely attend that course, if I had a choice.
