TidBit: Putting an architect in a scrum team is like putting mayonaise in cake

Christin Gorman is my hero! After her Hibernate bashing she now follows up with baking analogies applied to the current state of Scrum:

Tidbit: Cake Mix Analogies

It's funny how cake mix analogies pop up in interesting speeches lately.

Dan Ariely speaks about the IKEA effect that gives meaning to our work, which was essential for the success of cake mixes:

Dan Ariely: What makes us feel good about our work?

In her hilarious talk Christin Gorman shows how cake mixes are stupid and make us not enjoy our work any more, like many generic frameworks we use as programmers:

Hibernate should be to programmers what cake mixes are to bakers: beneath their dignity.

Tidbits: Lines of Code

According to the discussion in JavaScript Jabber episode 20:
  • the code base for the Cloud9 IDE fronted (correction by @javruben) consists of about 300'000 lines of JavaScript.
  • The GMail frontend consist of about 400'000 lines of JavaScript.

Update 2013-05-25: According to this Hanselminutes episode, the LucidChart frontend codebase contains about 200'000 lines of JavaScript (about 88% of that is "strongly typed" with the closure compiler)

Tidbit: Lines of Code

According to a claim in the Non Relational Data Stores Panel, the query parser in MySQL alone spans 100'000 lines of code in C and the whole Cassandra Database is 30'000 lines of Java.

I don't know what to deduce from that, but it is certainly interesting.

Some directions of thought:

  • Java is a more powerful language than C
  • MySQL is much more sophisticated than Cassandra
  • NoSQL databases are much less complex than relational databases
  • ...

Tidbit: Big Data

315116528_480edcad4d.jpg

The amounts of data that Twitter handles is astonishing:

  • 12 TB per day (= 4 PB per year)
    • ... this equals 17'000 CDs per day
    • ... this equals 9 mio floppy disks per day ( = 26.5 miles high)

  • And the amount is doubling multiple times a year.

... this is according to the presentation NoSQL at Twitter from October 2010, so today the pile of floppy disks would probably already be 50 miles high...

    Tidbits: Microsoft Platform vs. Startups

315116528_480edcad4d.jpg StackOverflow and TekPub were my prime examples for cool sites based on the Microsoft stack. It seems that I have to look for new examples:

We put a lot of thought into this - MS stack doesn't scale for startups.
    - Rob Conery, Founder of TekPub

Stack Overflow was known for their Windows stack, now they are using a lot more Linux machines...

    Tidbits: GitHub Users

    315116528_480edcad4d.jpg

According to This Developers Life 1.1.2 GitHub has over 560'000 users. That's quite a lot ...

Another interesting story from that podcast: Tom Preston-Werner, one of the founders of GitHub, turned down a 300'000$ bonus (plus a "big" salary) that Microsoft offered him for joining Microsoft. This was back in 2008 when he was in the beginning of starting GitHub ... (read his blog post about that decision)

As a sidenote: I am really positively suprised about This Developers Life, I did not think it possible to keep up the real interesting non-technical content for so many episodes. I am wondering how long they can sustain that quality of content...

    Tidbit: Lines of code

I just stumbled over two interesting tidbits about source code sizes:

According to this presentation the sources for the Windows operating system contain about 60 million lines of code and the sources for VisualStudio contain about 480 million lines of code.

This question on Quora asks: When will Facebook have more lines of code than the currently-popular version of Windows?
